So, apparently if I have the Maintenance Mode plug-in turned on I can’t get into the admin area of WordPress. Oh well.
Since I last wrote, complaining about school, I have:
- E-mailed my advisor multiple times to try and wrangle some class substitutions out of the system. Have I gotten a reply? No. I love school!
- Read a 318 page novel in one day instead of sleeping or watching television. It wasn’t even a particularly well written book; I spent most of the night trying to put it down, but couldn’t because I was convinced that a pair of characters had an ulterior motive for being nice and I wanted to know what it was. If they had an ulterior motive, the author never mentioned it. Disappointing.
- Injured my back to the point that sitting and standing was painful. A week of painful cracking at a chiropractor and I can walk and sit without feeling like throwing up, which, I think, could be considered an improvement.
- Re-read and re-watched “Jesus’ Son.” It remains both one of my favorite books and one of my favorite movies. It is rare that that happens, because I tend to be immensely irritated by film adaptations of good books. But this is perfect, and I think you should read the book and watch the movie, in whatever order you want to.
There was something that happened while I was at the library picking up the book I finished in 8 hours – well, happened might not be the right word. It was already happening when I stumbled upon it. Outside the library doors, leaning against the bike rack, was a man playing a harmonica. Coming around the corner, before I could see what was going on, I was convinced it was music from one of the churches across the street, because there was no reason to think otherwise. It was Wednesday, churches are loud, you know. But there this guy was, leaning against the bike rack, playing the harmonica with ridiculous skill and concentration. There was a group of maybe 6 people around him, listening intently. I was surprised, because something like that? Doesn’t happen around here. People stopping long enough to poke fun or laugh is commonplace, but when this guy stopped playing, they cheered, and I forgot where I was, because who’s nice these days? It was amazing.
(That might also explain why I stayed up so late trying to finish that book. It is so sad that people can’t just accept that sometimes, someone does something good just because it’s the thing to do. Kindness is shocking, and the fact that that is the truth sucks.)
And now that I can sit and the winter quarter at school is almost over, I am seriously considering re-designing this website. I just need an idea or twelve.
