It’s been five days since the election, and I haven’t said my piece about it. I was planning on it, really, but I wanted to wait until I saw what happened in California with Proposition 8.
And I’ve seen. And I’m sure you’ve all seen. Every sentence I try to write about how I feel about the giant leap backwards passing a discriminatory proposition like the one that barely (barely!) passed in California (and Arizona, Arkansas, and Florida. Sigh.) is ends in an incoherent pile of letters that doesn’t even make sense to me.
I can’t imagine what goes through the mind of a person who steps into a voting booth and backs something that will take away the civil rights of another human being. It’s disgusting to even consider. Whether it’s ignorance about the issue or willing support for it, I don’t understand.
And I’m going to stop because I feel the aforementioned incoherent pile of letters coming.
I could not have been more happy when I saw every news station paint Pennsylvania blue. Then Ohio, and Virginia and Florida. That’s a huge step forward, and I am so proud to be a part of that.
But America needs to get its act together. I have hope that it will. I just wish it wouldn’t take so long.
